Boiler breakdown diagnosis
We start with the appliance itself: the fault code, the pressure, the gas working pressure, the controls and the condition of the system water. Guessing at parts gets expensive, so we confirm the cause first, then tell you what it needs and what it will cost before we replace anything.
Common boiler faults we see across Glasgow
Older tenement systems, hard-worked family boilers and sludged-up radiators make up most of our repair work. These are the faults we're called out to most:
No heating
Radiators cold while hot water still works often points to a diverter valve, pump, thermostat or wiring fault.
No hot water
Hot water failing on a combi is commonly a diverter valve, flow sensor or scaled plate heat exchanger.
Boiler losing pressure
A dropping gauge usually means a leak, a tired expansion vessel or a passing relief valve — all traceable.
Unusual noises
Banging, kettling or whistling normally comes from sludge, scale, trapped air or a failing pump.
Boiler leaking
Water anywhere around the boiler needs looking at quickly. We find the source rather than patching the symptom.
Boiler not firing
Ignition lockouts can be gas supply, electrodes, a blocked condensate pipe or a faulty PCB.

We read the code, confirm it with live readings and explain what needs replacing before doing the work.
Radiators not heating properly
Cold at the top, cold at the bottom or cold upstairs only — each points somewhere different. We balance and treat systems too.
Repair or replace?
It's the question we get asked most. A repair usually makes sense when the boiler is reasonably young, parts are readily available and the fault is a one-off. Replacement starts to look sensible when breakdowns are becoming regular, parts are obsolete, or the cost of the repair is getting close to the value of the appliance.

My boiler has stopped working — what should I check first?
Check the pressure gauge is in the normal range, the thermostat and timer are calling for heat, the gas supply is on and there's no fault code on the display. If a reset doesn't hold, give us a call rather than repeating it.
Can you repair all makes of boiler?
We work on most domestic gas boilers, including Worcester, Baxi and Main. Occasionally a part is obsolete or the appliance can't be made safe again — if that's the case we'll tell you straight.
Is it worth repairing my boiler or should I replace it?
If the boiler is reasonably young, parts are available and the fault is a one-off, repairing is normally the sensible option. Repeat breakdowns, obsolete parts or a repair cost close to the value of the appliance point towards replacement.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
Usually a small leak somewhere on the system, a failed expansion vessel or a passing pressure relief valve. We trace the cause rather than just topping the system back up.
What do boiler fault codes mean?
Each manufacturer uses its own codes for things like ignition failure, low pressure, a blocked condensate or an overheat lockout. Tell us the make, model and code when you call and we'll usually have a good idea before we arrive.
