The first few minutes: what to do before we arrive
The damage a burst pipe does is mostly done by the water, not the pipe. Getting the supply turned off quickly is the single most useful thing you can do, and it's the same whether the problem is in a Glasgow tenement, a modern flat or a house out in Renfrewshire:
Turn the water off
Shut the stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and open the cold taps to empty the pipework. If you have a loft tank, the gate valve on it is the backup.
Protect the electrics
If water is near sockets, switches or the consumer unit, turn the power off at the main switch. Don't touch anything electrical while standing in water.
Turn off the heating or boiler
If the leak involves the boiler, cylinder or a radiator, switch the heating off at the controls to stop water being pumped around the system.

Most of our emergency work is water in the wrong place — and most of it is repairable without ripping the house apart.
Burst pipes
Frozen or corroded pipework that's split under floors, behind walls or in the loft. We isolate the supply, repair or replace the damaged section and get the water back on safely.
Leaks and dripping
Ceiling leaks, under-sink weeps, leaking radiator valves, passing toilet cisterns and hidden leaks that keep the water meter turning. We find the source, not just the damp patch.
No water or low pressure
Sudden pressure loss or no water at the taps can mean a failed stopcock, a stuck float valve or a leak on the supply pipe. We trace where the supply is going wrong.
Blocked and overflowing waste
Waste pipes backing up into sinks, baths or dishwashers, and external overflows running constantly. Cleared and repaired rather than left to happen again.
Toilet and cistern faults
Toilets that won't flush, won't stop filling or are leaking at the pan connection. Often a valve or washer — fixed quickly and cleanly.
Leaking boilers and cylinders
Water from a boiler casing, an unvented cylinder or the pipework around them. We make it safe, find the leak and tell you what the repair involves.
What happens when you call
We'll ask what's happened, what you've already turned off and where you are. From there we'll tell you anything else worth doing at your end — isolating the water to the leaking section, draining down, switching the heating off — and agree a time to come out. You'll get a clear price for the repair before any work starts, and a fixed quote if the job turns out to be bigger than a first visit suggests.
Gas and boiler emergencies
A lot of plumbing emergencies turn out to be heating problems wearing a plumbing disguise: a leaking boiler, a cylinder dripping through a ceiling, a radiator valve that's let go. We're Gas Safe registered heating engineers as well as plumbers, so we can deal with the whole system — you don't need to find a separate contractor. One important exception: if you can smell gas, that's a job for the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999, day or night. Open the windows, don't operate light switches or anything electrical, and get out of the property. We'll handle the repair afterwards once the supply is declared safe.

After the repair
Once the leak is fixed and the system is back up and running, it's worth having the pipework that caused the problem looked over properly. Old isolation valves, tired washing machine hoses and corroded fittings are usually the next to go, and swapping them while we're on site is cheap insurance against the next call-out. And if a boiler repair turns out to be the answer, an annual boiler service is the best way to stop the same thing happening next winter.

A pipe has burst in my Glasgow home — what should I do first?
Turn the water off at the stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink), then open the cold taps to drain what's left in the pipes. If water is anywhere near sockets, switches or light fittings, switch the electricity off at the consumer unit too. Once the water is off, call us on 07399 217024.
Do you charge more for urgent call-outs?
We don't publish call-out prices online because every job is different. What we do promise is that you'll be told the cost before any work starts — no surprise bills when the job's done. Call us and we'll talk it through.
Can you fix a leak without damaging my walls or floor?
Often, yes. Many leaks can be traced to accessible pipework under sinks, behind toilet cisterns or around the boiler and cylinder. Where pipework is buried or boxed in we'll explain exactly what needs opening up before we touch anything.
Is a leaking boiler an emergency?
Water dripping from a boiler should be switched off and looked at promptly — running a leaking boiler can damage internal parts and, in some cases, the system around it. If you can smell gas as well as water, open the windows, don't operate light switches and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 first.
My ceiling is bulging with water — what do I do?
Don't poke it. Put a bucket underneath, turn the water off at the stopcock and, if it's below a bathroom or loft tank, drain the upper fittings by running the cold taps. Get the water off and us called out — a plasterer can deal with the ceiling once the leak is fixed.
