Installing boilers in larger family homes

• Heating that struggles to bring a large house up to temperature.
• Increasingly frequent repairs on an older appliance.
• A cylinder or system that's clearly undersized for the property.
• Extensions or added bathrooms that have changed demand since the boiler was fitted.

Sizing for bigger heat loss and demand

A large villa with high ceilings, older windows and a lot of external wall has considerably more heat loss than a modern semi of the same floor area. Sizing a boiler off a rule of thumb, rather than a proper assessment, tends to leave homes like these under-heated.

We look at the actual heat loss and hot water demand of the property before recommending anything, rather than simply matching what's already fitted.

System boiler and unvented cylinder considerations

Given the number of bathrooms in many Kilmacolm homes, a system boiler paired with an unvented cylinder is often the better fit — it can deliver strong flow to more than one outlet at once, which a combi generally can't manage as well at this scale.

That's not universal, though — mains pressure, available space and how the household actually uses hot water all factor in, and we'll talk it through rather than assume.

Pipework and long runs

Longer pipe runs to distant bathrooms or wings of the house need adequate pipe sizing and insulation to avoid heat loss and slow hot water delivery. We check this at survey stage rather than after the boiler's already in.

Where the existing system has years of sludge or scale in it, we flush it, fit a filter and dose it with inhibitor so the new boiler isn't working against a dirty system from day one.
